"We see our whānau class(s) as leaders in our kura. These classes typically lead our school in welcoming visitors and new students and staff."
Mount Maunganui Intermediate currently runs two whānau classes. These classes have a focus on Maori tikanga and learning through a Te Ao Maori learning lens.
The Mount Maunganui Intermediate whānau class is not a bilingual class.
Most learning occurs in English. However, Te Reo is used regularly within lessons. Mihimihi occurs each morning to start the school day and where possible, learning topics are based on Te Ao Maori concepts.
We see our whānau class(s) as leaders in our kura. These classes typically lead our school in welcoming visitors and new students and staff. They are often called upon to help in the wider kura with tikanga Maori and to embody our Coastal Values.
Our whānau classes follow the MMI curriculum and follow our classroom timetable. The only timetable difference is that on Wednesday afternoons our whānau class participates in Kapahaka.
Students wanting to be considered for our 2023 whānau classes must submit an application. Placement in the class is not automatic. Like all classes at MMI, we consider balancing our classrooms with learning needs/levels, social combinations and behaviour challenges etc.
By applying for a place in the Whanau Class:
Students must be committed to the Mount Maunganui Intermediate Kapahaka roopu
Whānau must be committed to attend whanau hui. These will be held twice per term.
Parents must show a commitment to support the education and behavioural expectations of Mount Maunganui Intermediate.
Students will uphold our school values and be role models for their class, school, whanau and community
