ICT / Bring Your Own Chromebook (BYOC)/ Mobile Device Information

Introduction to BYOC (Bring Your Own Chromebook)
Mount Maunganui Intermediate uses a Bring Your Own Chromebook (BYOC) model for students wishing to bring a device from home. This initiative allows students to bring a device from home to supplement their learning in class.

Chromebooks are the only supported devices at MMI
, ensuring a consistent and effective learning environment.

ICT Responsible Use Agreement
At Mount Maunganui Intermediate, we are committed to fostering responsible and safe use of technology. Our ICT Responsible Use Agreement outlines the expectations for all students, staff, and volunteers. Please review this agreement carefully as part of the enrolment process.

BYOC Expectations and Guidelines
Students bringing their own Chromebooks to school must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Devices are to be used exclusively for educational purposes during school hours, with teacher-directed activities.
  • Students must demonstrate responsibility in caring for their devices; the school is not liable for loss or damage.
  • Devices must meet the school’s minimum specifications (CLICK HERE).

When a student registers a Chromebook, the following options are available.

  1. School-like settings (with home use flexibility):
The Chromebook will function the same as a school-managed device but students can also use it on their home network outside school hours. There is no ability to access the Google Play store or install Apps.

  2. Open device (No Play Store):
A Chromebook without access to the Google Play Store but parents can use the device with another gmail account. This gives more flexibility than a school policy locked device, but still prevents Google’s Play Store App installation.

  3. Open device with Google Play Store enabled:
This option gives full access, including the Google Play Store.

Your child’s device will then assume one of these modes outside of school hours.
If your child does bring a Chomebook to school then indicate your choice, please complete the linked Google Form.

    PLEASE NOTE
All student BYOC devices will remain fully restricted and managed through our school network during school hours (8:00 am – 3:00 pm)
There is no content filtering or security when a Chromebook is used outside the school network.
Parents should install their own parental control tools (e.g.
Qustodio or Google’s Family Link which is free) to help manage use outside school hours.

Our BYOC system is still evolving and we may need to make adjustments to maintain a secure learning-focused digital environment. We appreciate your support and understanding as we implement these changes.

Mobile Device Procedure

To maintain a focused learning environment, students are not permitted to use mobile phones during school hours unless authorised for health and safety reasons. All mobile devices must be handed in to the class teacher for secure storage during the day.

Support for Non-BYOC Students

Students who do not bring their own Chromebook will still have access to school Chromebooks and other devices as part of their learning. Our goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of their situation, have the tools they need to succeed.

Parent and Student Involvement

We believe in a partnership between the school and families to create a safe and productive digital environment. Parents are encouraged to discuss the ICT Responsible Use Agreement with their children and to reach out to the school with any questions.
