At Mount Maunganui Intermediate, we are committed to stretching our learners through our Academy Programme. These specialised classes bring together students from across the school for high-level academic extension in literacy, numeracy, science, leadership, and critical thinking.
How Academies Run
Our academies operate on a weekly cycle throughout the school year:
- Wednesday Afternoons: Dedicated Academy sessions for selected groups.
- Friday Middle Block: Continued academic extension and leadership development.
- Friday Specialist Enrichment (Block 2): Our six Specialist teachers deliver high-interest enrichment courses within their specific subject areas (e.g., Hard Materials, Food Tech, Performing Arts).
Selection & Eligibility
Selection for these classes is data-driven to ensure we are targeting the right level of challenge for every student:
- The Process: The Senior Leadership Team makes final selections based on classroom data and in-school assessments provided by teachers.
- Year 8 Focus (Term 1): During the first term, academies are primarily available to Year 8 students as we utilize their achievement data from the previous year.
- Leadership Academy: Our Student Councillors participate in a dedicated Leadership Academy during the first term of the year.
- Ongoing Opportunity: Selection is refreshed throughout the year; students may have the opportunity to attend multiple different Academy classes as new blocks begin.
Further Extension Opportunities
Beyond our scheduled Academies, MMI provides a wide range of external academic challenges and competitions, including:
Writing & Speech Competitions
ICAS and Kiwi Testing & Otago Problem Solving
Science Fair & Future Problem Solving
