Understanding Your Child’s New School Report

The government has introduced a new reporting format in 2026. It is designed to give you a clearer, more accurate picture of your child’s learning journey.

We know that changes can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but we are here to walk you through it! Our goal is to ensure you feel confident reading your child’s report and tracking their progress.

New Progress Descriptors

The new format focuses on your child’s level of independence and mastery at Phase 3 of the curriculum.

Your child will be given an overall grade – Emerging, Developing, Consolidating, Proficient, or Exceeding – for reading, writing, and maths.

Is my child on track with their learning?

The diagram below is to help inform parents, and whānau, how their child is progressing at mid-year and end-of-year reporting checkpoints.

Mid Year Reporting: Checking Progress

  • On Track (Consolidating, Proficient, or Exceeding): Your child is making steady progress and is where they need to be.

  • Not Yet on Track (Emerging or Developing): Your child is still working toward foundational goals and needs a bit more time.

End-of-Year Reporting: Measuring Achievement

The end-of-year report evaluates whether your child has successfully mastered their current year level’s curriculum.

  • Has Met Expectations (Proficient or Exceeding): Your child has successfully met the curriculum expectations and is ready to confidently tackle the next year’s learning.

  • Has Not Yet Met Expectations (Emerging, Developing, or Consolidating): While your child has made progress, they haven’t quite reached all the expected outcomes for their year level.

What will your child’s report look like?

To give you an idea of what to expect when you recieve your report, here is a quick preview of how the report will look for your child.

Core Curriculum Achievement (Reading, Writing, and Maths)

For each of these core subjects you will see a box in the top right hand corner. This highlights your child’s overall achievement level and their classroom effort. Underneath that you will have the following;
Teacher Comment: A summary of your child’s strengths, attitude, and classroom participation.
Next Steps: Clear, targeted learning goals your child is currently working toward in class.
How You Can Help at Home: Everyday strategies and activities you can use to reinforce their learning outside of school.
Strand Breakdowns: Visual progress bars showing exactly where your child sits on the scale from Emerging to Exceeding for specific elements.

Coastal Values Progress Indicators
The next section of the report tracks our Coastal Values – Ako, Manaaki, Pono, and Tuakiri. Students are evaluated on how they live out these values daily, using four progress indicators:
Not yet meeting the value
Beginning to meet the value
Usually meeting the value
Consistently meeting the value

Attendance Information
The final part of the report provides a snapshot of your child’s school attendance. This includes their overall attendance percentage alongside a visual breakdown of present days, justified or unjustified absences, and lates.
