Chess team win BOP Champs

48 students from across the Bay of Plenty gathered at the Greerton Community Hall in Tauranga for the 2025 NZCF Bay of Plenty Intermediate Interschool Chess Championship.

It was a fantastic day for all 12 of our students who competed, with many playing in their very first tournament.

A huge congratulations to Alex Carter, Jack Norton, Dohyun Kim, and Finn Hoogstrate who all ranked first on their boards.

Our A Team: Alex Carter, Jack Norton, Jack Ha, and Finn Hoogstrate, played with skill and determination and are now the new champions of the 2025 NZCF Bay of Plenty Intermediate Interschool Chess Championship! They will now fly to Christchurch to compete in the NZCF National Interschool Chess Championship on 20–21 September.

Also representing our school were Oscar Sedgwick, Arlo Shallard, Dohyun Kim, Dylan Eden, Oscar Mason, Readon John, Charlie Ede, and George Johnston.

All teams played exceptionally well, and it’s exciting to see a strong Year 7 team coming through for next year.

Good luck at the Nationals in Christchurch team!
