The Mount Maunganui Intermediate cross country team had a superb day at Waipuna Park on the 2nd day of the the 2023 AIMS Games.
The weeks of training and hard worked paid dividends for our students as they competed against some of the best runners from around New Zealand. All of the runners improved on their Super 11 performances.
Individual highlights included Sienne Rowe who raced superbly to finish in 2nd place in the first event of the day – the Year 7 girls 3km race. That result was quickly followed by Ashton Mitford-Burgess who finished in 3rd place in the Year 7 boys 3km race. His time of 10:53 was very impressive.
Consistent running from our Year 7 Girls ensured that they finished 3rd in the teams race. W
And our first and only gold medal of the day came from our Year 7 Boys relay team who beat the much favoured Otumoetai Intermediate and Tauranga Intermediate.
Our Year 8 runners all performed well in some exceptional strong fields. Our Year 8 Girls team finished 9th and the Year 8 Boys team finished 4th, just missing out on a medal.
Our final medal of the day came in the 12km Ultimate Relay. In a close race for 2nd and 3rd we managed to pull away from Palmerston North in the final legs to claim second place in a time of 43:33. Not bad for 12km of running.
