AIMS Games

Well that’s a wrap! Zespri AIMS Games 2023 is over for another year. What an amazing experience for our MMI athletes, supporters and staff.  We have been lucky to witness some passionate athletes that have shown a commitment and dedication to their chosen sports to get here. As the week went on you could feel the intensity of the games and the pressure that some athletes performed.  Our Football Boys and Girls both made it through to playoffs for 3rd and 4th place on Friday 8th September.  Both teams put everything into their final game and it was tough to

Our MMI Boys Hockey Team has had a busy week and been playing some challenging teams.  The AIMS oath of being gracious in defeat was what our boys hockey has done throughout the week.  On Thursday 7 September, the boys team had an early morning game at 8am. It was beautiful, the sun was shining and Mount Maunganui looked like they were in good spirits. MMI was playing Mahurangi School, which is a school from Warkworth.  Another school that has travelled a huge distance to be here for the week.  A great start from Flynn Augustine with a great pass

AIMS Rip Rugby is a fast-paced game full of crucial moments. That was what you got to see when the MMI Rip rugby team versed Tamatea’s team on Thursday 7 September. Both teams have already had 12 games this week with mostly wins. This game played at Blake Park Oval was an important one.   As soon as the whistle blew at 10.05 am the game was on! It was intense, watching as the ball went back and forth, holding your breath as one of the team’s players was about to score and then RIP the other team would rip the

Zespri AIMS Games run a fantastic event during the AIMS week called AIMS Games Give Back. This is where teams head to the beach in their downtime and complete a beach clean up. The Give Back is run in conjunction with Tauranga City Council and last year the teams collected a total of 35.9 kgs of waste: 47% being recyclable and 53% being destined for landfill.  Such a great way to get our athletes thinking about environmental issues and ways to be sustainable. This year’s results are not out yet, but let’s hope that it is less than last year!

Our mixed hockey team strives for a win. Mount Intermediate Mixed Hockey team had a great game this Thursday – the 7th of September. They have now won most of their games which is an awesome result from our school. This team has always been trying their best with a positive attitude.   Arriving at the game a few minutes early, we got to see the end of a shootout between a couple of other schools. Even just watching their reactions watching a hockey game that they had nothing to do with, really showed their passion for the sport. They were

Our MMI Water Polo Team enters Baywave pool with a splash.  Their 3rd game for the tournament and they are looking strong.  Tuesday 5 September MMI vs Carmel College at 10.30am. Jake Thompson as the first quarter goalie had not much to do as Carmel had no way through the tough defence of MMI. MMI played heavy on the defence whilst still having great shots at the goal. Carmel College had no chance. Early on in the game it soon became apparent that this game would give our MMI team an opportunity to develop their team plays and skills. It

Our MMI Media Team learns how the professionals do things!  On the Wednesday of the AIMS tournament, our MMI media team decided it would be a great idea to visit the real media team of the Zespri AIMS tournament. They have a nice spot for all their work located at the Bay Oval building at Blake park.  The Zespri AIMS Media Team were well set up, you could see where they edit photos and videos, and post on their social media. Zespri AIMS has an Instagram account, website, app and Facebook, but they mostly post on their website. All feeling

Wednesday the 6th of September we met the MMI girls football team at Gordon Spratt Football Park. The MMI and Papamoa College girls football teams had arrived early in the morning to begin warming up. Both teams had won all of their previous games and intended to keep it that way, but this morning that was about to change.  A quick chat with coach Maia Ririnui before the game gave us some insights of how the team has been going so far in the tournament.  He said that the team has been playing really well together and have had all

The Mount Maunganui Intermediate cross country team had a superb day at Waipuna Park on the 2nd day of the the 2023 AIMS Games. The weeks of training and hard worked paid dividends for our students as they competed against some of the best runners from around New Zealand. All of the runners improved on their Super 11 performances. Individual highlights included Sienne Rowe who raced superbly to finish in 2nd place in the first event of the day – the Year 7 girls 3km race. That result was quickly followed by Ashton Mitford-Burgess who finished in 3rd place in

Monday 4th September, our MMI netball team’s first netball game was at midday. As it started to warm up, I spotted the sea of bright green from across the court warming up, doing passes and hyping each other up. Next the umpire quickly did a nail check to see if nails were short enough to play.  Our awesome MMI team came 2nd in their local A division during the season so are well placed to do well in this tournament. The team were thrilled to see that Nishay had scored the first goal! Then out comes Kyla with fantastic defence
